Bedford Bus & Coach History

The early years of the Bedford brand associated with the renowned engineering and iron foundry company Vauxhall, founded in the mid-20th century in London's Vauxhall district.

In 1905, it moved to Luton, Bedfordshire, where it began producing passenger cars.

During the company's difficult 1920s, the American concern GM, long intending to establish a foothold in the UK for its entry into the European market, took an interest in Vauxhall and made it its British subsidiary in 1925.

Plans for a foothold in the European market also encompassed the truck and bus sector.

Activities in this area began with the import of Chevrolet trucks to the UK, and in the late 1920s, their assembly began at the Hendon plant.

In 1931, American management decided to establish its own production of light trucks tailored to the requirements of the British market.

Their brand name became Bedford, named after the neighboring town and the entire county where the factory was located. The new facility became the truck division of Vauxhall. The reliable and fast Bedford trucks and bus were a great success and soon became popular in all types of transportation.
