American companies Proterra and Alexander Dennis started developing a fully electric double-decker bus, which will be used to transport passengers between Claremont and the suburbs of Los Angeles in California.

It believed that electric transport will significantly improve the environmental situation, especially in the city and suburbs, where there is a large concentration of cars.

At the same time, electric transport will significantly reduce urban noise, since such cars move on the roads almost silently.

The length of the route that the new double-decker electric bus will travel will be more than 55 kilometers one way.

The program will use the development of Alexander Dennis, which specializes in double-decker buses, while Proterra will be responsible for the electrical part of the project.

Judging by the sketches published by Ars Technica, the new vehicle is being created on the basis of the double-decker three-axle bus Alexander Dennis Enviro500. Depending on the layout of the cabin, such buses can carry from 80 to 140 people.

It is expected that the new electric bus will receive a lithium-ion battery with an energy density of 160 watt-hours per kilogram.

The customer of the electric bus was the transport company.

The company's management said that by 2030 they plan to make their entire bus fleet electric.

Proterra created the Catalyst E2 Max electric bus of its own design.

During tests, the bus managed to travel 1,102.2 miles (1,773.8 kilometers) on a single battery charge, setting a world record.
