The new BYD BD11 double-decker bus is set to replace London’s Routemaster with a maximum range of over 400 miles and a high level of passenger comfort.
The Chinese company’s latest electric bus launched 11 years after it first launched a bus in the UK. The company’s fleet of buses has now clocked up over 18 million miles.
The BD11 has a total battery capacity of up to 532 kWh – the largest of any electric commercial vehicle currently available in the UK.
The usable capacity is 457 kWh, and while BYD has yet to confirm the range, it has said the bus will travel at over 0.9 miles per kWh, suggesting a usable range of over 400
miles.
But like other electric buses, the BD11 will use a modular battery system so operators can change it to suit the vehicle’s usage profile.
Most London buses cover between 100 and 200 miles a day.
BYD highlights the proven safety and durability of its Blade battery technology (which is also used in its electric vehicles) as a key factor in the
BD11’s popularity, claiming it can last between 12 and 20 years.
The fact that the company manufactures its batteries entirely in-house means that rebuilding the BD11’s powertrain will be much cheaper and more sustainable than if it had used a
battery from a third-party supplier.
