Blue Bird, a nearly 100-year-old school bus manufacturer in the United States, is opening an "Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Center".
The facility will occupy a 4, 000-square-meter space at Blue Bird's manufacturing plant in Fort Valley, Georgia. According to the company's plans, the division will help increase
production of electric buses from 100 to 5, 000 per year.
The facility will assemble electric versions of the Blue Bird Vision (a classic 77-passenger Type C bus) and All American (an 84-passenger flat-front
Type D bus). Each will have a 155 kWh battery and a range of 200 km (124 miles).
Currently, approximately 1, 000 Blue Bird electric buses are in service, representing only 6% of the company's total production.
The company currently produces approximately four electric school buses daily, but hopes to increase production to 20 buses per day with the opening of the new facility.
Blue Bird expects demand for electric school buses to grow in the coming years.
School districts in the US and Canada have already begun replacing their fleets of conventionally powered buses with all-electric ones, aiming to reduce emissions, save on fuel, and improve
student health.
